There is nothing we need more teaching and training in than simply living—living to the glory of God, living for Jesus, living in love and faith and hope, living in patience and gentleness, living sacrificially and hospitably, living with our children and our parents, living with dignity and in joy. And there is no one more accessible and present and skilled at teaching us than Jesus. That’s why we keep coming back… to sit at Jesus’s feet and listen to his Word. We’re learning how to live all the details of our lives in the company of Jesus.

I’ve learned this lesson the hard way and perhaps I can help prevent you from going through some painful lessons yourself. In a time of conflict, ask questions but make sure they are genuine questions. Resist the urge to ask questions that lead people to answer in the way you would want them to answer. Unlike Jesus, you don’t know the intentions of a person’s heart. Give your full attention to their answer without mentally formatting your response as they speak. Don’t be afraid of pauses in a conversation. It’s better to be thoughtful than it is to be quick.

How extraordinary to find the common bond of love expressed in a shared poverty. On this basis He could speak to us of shared values, of a vision and a mission we could make our own. From the manger, this Child of the virgin Mary could speak to us of our destiny, our dignity, our ability, in His Name, to change not only ourselves but the world. Here we hear of our God-given rights and of our responsibilities as God’s adopted children. This Child will come to represent everything that is inspiring in terms of mercy, of compassion, of love, of justice and of peace. Christmas is a time to renew one’s spirit in the message and in the challenge of the Christ Child, a time to determine to become more credible witnesses to Him.
