Renewing the mind is a little like refinishing furniture. It is a two-stage process. It involves taking off the old and replacing it with the new. The old is the lies you have learned to tell or were taught by those around you; it is the attitudes and ideas that have become a part of your thinking but do not reflect reality. The new is the truth. To renew your mind is to involve yourself in the process of allowing God to bring to the surface the lies you have mistakenly accepted and replace them with truth. To the degree that you do this, your behavior will be transformed.
Renewal of the Mind
Luc Niebergall
We aren’t called to renew our mind in hyped-up theories, fad doctrines, and YouTube videos; we need to renew our mind in the Word of God. Don’t miss what God could be wanting to deposit in you by focusing on the wrong thing. Stay focused. There are many voices speaking loudly right now. Make sure you are tuning your ears to hear the voice of the Father.

If you are frightened or afraid, there is no use feeling guilty about it. What you need to do is fix your mind upon God and ask him to fill your mind with himself. And as your mind is transformed, your whole personality will be transformed, including your body and your feelings. The transformation of the self away from a life of fear and insufficiency takes place as we fix our minds upon God as he truly is.

The more of God’s Word we know and the more we’re reminding ourselves of His truths, the less dependent we become on others to snap us out of our self-induced negative spirals. We can begin to rely on God’s Spirit to renew our minds.

In order to fulfill our purpose in life, we must remain committed to the daily practice of dealing with the toxic thoughts that can take root in our heart and sabotage our destiny. Things like bitterness, resentment, disappointment, jealousy, insecurity, fear, or offenses can easily undercut your God-given calling and your purpose. It is so important that we guard our hearts (Proverbs 4:23).

Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? Take those thoughts that come to you the moment you wake up in the morning. You have not originated them but they are talking to you, they bring back the problems of yesterday, etc. Somebody is talking. Who is talking to you? Your self is talking to you. Now this man’s treatment [in Psalm 42] was this: instead of allowing this self to talk to him, he starts talking to himself. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul?” he asks. His soul had been depressing him, crushing him. So he stands up and says, “Self, listen for a moment, I will speak to you.”
