We simply don’t have the luxury of playing nice with prayer. Not if we want things to change. Not if we want to be free—from whatever’s keeping us held down and held back. Not if we want our hearts whole and thriving and deep and grounded . . . different.

It is not difficult for God to raise even an emotionally dead person. If something inside of you has shut down, if you have sinned and feel ashamed, God’s great love and rich mercy will cover you. Ask Him, “Lord, forgive me. I want to receive Your mercy.” It is as simple as that, a gift that makes you alive. You give Him your heart, and you live.

Get us back to the place where we were alive with a flaming fire in our hearts, where we would wake up in the middle of the night and seek Your face. Where tears would stream down our cheeks, the place before religion tamed us. God, get us back to the Holy Wild.

Even fanaticism is to be preferred to indifference. I’d sooner risk the dangers of a tornado of religious excitement than see the air grown stagnant with dead formality.
When thou prayest, rather let thy heart be without words than thy words be without heart.
The prayers and supplications that Christ offered up were, joined with strong cries and tears, herein setting us example not only to pray, but to be fervent and importunate in prayer. How many dry prayers, how few wet ones, do we offer up to God!
