If you are the only place that an adult can turn to when he or she needs their needs met, that’s a key indicator of a real boundary issue. Having more than one person in our lives allows our friends to be human. To be busy. To be unavailable at times. To hurt and have problems of their own. To have time alone.

“No” can be an anointed word. We cannot be saviours to all. We are servants, daughters, sons, and brides, but not saviours. There is only one Saviour. We cannot have his job. We are called and allowed to rest. God is able to keep his world going, and in the meantime, it is very important we do not do more than he is asking.

While God does want us to be open with others, he also encourages us to put boundaries in place as we do. He talks repeatedly about guarding our hearts. So what’s the difference? Hiding is a response out of fear, while guarding is a proactive choice to protect what matters most. In other words, we’re not to deliberately put something of worth where it won’t be valued.
