Thomas a Kempis

He has great tranquillity of heart who cares neither for the praises nor the fault-finding of men. He will easily be content and pacified, whose conscience is pure. You are not holier if you are praised, nor the more worthless if you are found fault with. What you are, that you are; neither by word can you be made greater than what you are in the sight of God.

John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God believe also in me.” In seasons of uncertainty and turmoil, we are being asked to make a deliberate decision. We are being asked to not allow our hearts to be troubled. The only way I know how to do that is to spend copious amounts of time with God so I can walk through hard times from a place of peace… and that peace will impact those directly around me. It starts with me.

Referring to Philippians 4:7 “His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

It conjures up a picture. What will happen is that this peace of God will walk round the ramparts and towers of our life. We are inside, and the activities of the heart and mind are producing those stresses and anxieties and strains from the outside. But the peace of God will keep them all out and we ourselves inside will be at perfect peace.

Jesus’ rest frees us from looking to identity as our savior. As Christians, we have a new identity, rooted in him and his work. The gospel guides what we shape our identity around, so we can freely lay down our rights, our thoughts, and our opinions of ourselves at Jesus’ feet, knowing that he will mold and shape us as a potter does clay. He gives us a new identity that is secured and satisfied in his work on our behalf.

Eternal God, this holy night is radiant with the brilliance of your one true light. May that light illuminate our hearts and shine in our words and deeds. May the hope, the peace, the joy, and the love represented by the birth in Bethlehem this night fill our lives and become part of all that we say and do. May we share the divine life of your son Jesus Christ, even as he humbled himself to share our humanity. Amen.
