As a kid, I couldn’t wait to grow up. I could eat dessert whenever I wanted, could watch TV whenever I wanted and be completely in charge of myself. But now that I am a grown-up, I’m beginning to learn that growing up in God’s Kingdom is actually the whole aging process in reverse. When Jesus says, “Become like a child,” it is not something that happens in an instant. It’s a process. When we are born, we must begin growing up. When we are born again, we must begin growing down.

What God is saying is that He doesn’t want us to become childish, but to have childlike faith. That’s why God used Smith Wigglesworth in such a powerful way. His favourite saying was, “God said it; I believe it and that settles it.” If we have that childlike faith today not to question God all the time but just to believe what He’s told us, then we too will have faith that can literally move mountains.

In Matthew 18:3, Jesus says, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” What does He mean? Is He asking us not to be mature? No, what Jesus is actually saying is that childlike faith is maturity. Innocent, simple faith that believes what God says is real and that expects Him to do what He says He will do. That’s the mark of a mature believer, not complicated doctrine and fancy arguments.
