With God, we make no deals. God sets all the terms; set them long ago with us in mind (while counting the potential hairs on our potential heads being formed even then within the womb of the universe). God said, “This is the contract: I will die for you if you will let me.” Who could have imagined those terms?
You come before the judgment seat of God full of rebellion and mistakes. Because of his justice he cannot dismiss your sin, but because of his love he cannot dismiss you. So, in an act which stunned the heavens, he punished himself on the cross for your sins. God’s justice and love are equally honored. And you, God’s creation, are forgiven.
The great thing to remember is that though our feelings come and go, his love for us does not. It is not wearied by our standards of indifference, and therefore, it is quite relentless in its determination that we shall be cured of those sins at whatever cost to us; at whatever cost to him.
Repentance leads to forgiveness: I certainly believe (now really, long since with a merely intellectual assent) that a sin once repented and forgiven, is gone, annihilated, burnt up in the fire of Divine Love, white as snow.
Jesus died so that you could know God better, so that you could be alone with him without sin being the elephant in the room. There is no longer any barrier between his goodness and our hearts. He tore down the veil. Learning the magnitude of that goodness is our Christian walk.
Lord, remove every barrier the enemy has put in place so that the only barrier which remains is the cross itself.
Tell me in the light of the cross, isn’t it a scandal that you and I live today as we do?
Does God really love us? I say look to the crucified Jesus. Look to the old rugged cross. By every thorn that punctured His brow. By every mark of the back lacerating scourge. By every hair of his beard plucked from his cheeks by cruel fingers. By every bruise which heavy fists made upon His head. God said, “I love you!” By all the spit that landed on his face. By every drop of sinless blood that fell to the ground. By every breath of pain which Jesus drew upon the cross. By every beat of His loving heart. God said, I love you.
Faith is not the price that buys God’s blessing, it is the hand that receives His blessing. The price was paid for us by Jesus Christ on the cross.
