But perhaps there is a weariness, even a reluctance, in his heart as he gazes back over his shoulder, out of the church door and into the street: ‘When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd’ (Matt. 9:36).
