In our praying, we should speak to God about Himself - that is praise; or about His gifts - that is thanksgiving; or about other people - that is intercession; or about our sins - that is confession and penitence; or about our needs - that is petition. Prayer has five fingers, like a hand, and each in turn must be pointed to God, that our prayer may be full and complete.

We must, furthermore, protest the notion of manifest destiny that permits our nation to do anything it chooses. For if we insist on walking down this road, than at some point - as God is God, the God in whose eyes there is real good and real evil - we who have trampled so completely on all of God's amazing gifts to this country are going to wake up and find that He cares very much what we do. We must not suppose that we are playing only intellectual and political games. If God exists, and if He judges good and evil, then we must realize that those who trample on His great gifts will one day know His judgment. The scriptures bear solemn witness to this. Our nation is not immune.

An elder was asked by a certain soldier if God would forgive a sinner. And he said to him: "Tell me, beloved, if your cloak is torn, will you throw it away?" The soldier replied: "No. I will mend it and put it back on." The elder said to him: "If you take care of your cloak, will God not be merciful to His own image?"

Begin by thanking Him for some little thing, and then go on, day by day, adding to your subjects of praise; thus you will find their numbers grow wonderfully; and, in the same proportion, will your subjects of murmuring and complaining diminish, until you see in everything some cause for thanksgiving.

It is a great deal easier to do that which God gives us to do, no matter how hard it is, than to face the responsibilities of not doing it.

We are children, perhaps, at the very moment when we know that it is as children that God loves us - not because we have deserved his love and not in spite of our undeserving; not because we try and not because we recognize the futility of our trying; but simply because he has chosen to love us. We are children because he is our father; and all of our efforts, fruitful and fruitless, to do good, to speak truth, to understand, are the efforts of children who, for all their precocity, are children still in that before we loved him, he loved us, as children, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayer is the one prime, eternal condition by which the Father is pledged to put the Son in possession of the world. Christ prays through His people. Had there been importunate, universal, and continuous prayer by God's people, long ere this the earth had been possessed for Christ.

You are confronted again and again with the choice of letting God speak or letting your wounded self cry out. Although there has to be a place where you can allow your wounded part to get the attention it needs, your vocation is to speak from the place in you where God dwells.

It's so much easier to pray for a bore than to go and see him.

If you want the truth to go round the world you must hire an express train to pull it; but if you want a lie to go round the world. it will fly; it is as light as a feather, and a breath will carry it. It is well said in the old proverb,' a lie will go round the world while truth is putting its boots on.
