Think about Jesus being “full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) If the pendulum swings excessively toward grace at the expense of truth, we end up with a “sugarcoated Jesus,” the favorite of motivational preachers. They tell their audiences what will make them feel good, without including the responsibilities that the truth of who Jesus is demands: repentance, restitution and righteous living. And if the pendulum swings too far toward the truth side, we get a judgmental version of Jesus, whose immense gracious love and compassion are trodden under.
