The shield was the ultimate body protection for the Roman soldier. It was tall enough that the soldier could hide behind it and could be raised to protect against arrows. Roman shields had a covering of rawhide to quench fiery arrows, and just as the soldier could hide behind the shield, we, too, hide behind God’s Shield of Faith.
