Yes, Jesus hung out with prostitutes and drunkards and outcasts.

Here’s the thing, though – by the time Jesus was finished with these people, they weren’t prostitutes or drunkards or outcasts anymore.

Jesus came to transform people, not indulge them. Christianity is about surrender, not comfort. We are to align ourselves with his standard, not the other way around.

Shame’s power can be broken. In fact, its power has been broken. There is a key that will unfasten the shackles of shame that have bound and imprisoned you. This key can unlock the shame of the wrongs you have done. This key can unlock the shame of the wrongs done to you. This key is the love of Jesus Christ, crucified and risen.

When love motivates us to reduce ourselves to nothing, we’ll desire that God be all. God protects those who’ve made love their business, who’ve stopped worrying about themselves. They are amazingly unflappable and unassailable; after all, these unpretentious peacemakers live out the courage and strength of their love. If you haven’t tried this yet, you should risk everything to learn how to love.

Horatius Bonar

It is forgiveness that sets a man working for God. He does not work in order to be forgiven, but because he has been forgiven, and the consciousness of his sin being pardoned makes him long for its entire removal than ever he did before. An unforgiven man cannot work. He has not the will, nor the power, nor the liberty. He is in chains. Israel in Egypt could not serve Jehovah. “Let my people go, that they may serve Me.” was God’s message to Pharaoh (Exodus 8:1) first liberty, then service.

Thomas a Kempis

Remember how dry and how undevout you are without Jesus, and how unwise, how vain, and how ignorant you are when you desire anything but Jesus. Truly, such a desire is more harmful to you than if you had lost all the world. What can this world give you save through the help of Jesus? To be without Jesus is the pain of hell. And to be with Him is a pleasant paradise.
